Apixaban is an anticoagulant, useful at treating or preventing blood clots in a range of circumstances. Better known by the brand name Eliquis, patients buy Apixaban to reduce the risk of stroke or other injuries---including death---due to blood clots. Risks associated with Apixaban are excess bleeding which, barring accidents, can usually be controlled by cautious patients.

This medication comes in tablets, either 2.5 mg or 5 mg. Dosage strength depends largely on the condition being treated, though personal factors may also play a role. Tablets are taken twice per day, with or without food as desired. Duration of treatment can be variable, ranging from 12 days to 6 months or longer.

Taking Apixaban

Patients most often buy Apixaban to:

  • Reduce risk of stroke and embolism in non-valvular atrial fibrillation.
  • Reduce risk of deep vein thrombosis following hip or knee replacement surgery.
  • Treatment of deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism.
  • Prevent recurring deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism.

The medication, like other anticoagulants, interferes with the process of a blood clot forming. It doesn't directly prevent it from happening like antiplatelets do, but it ultimately provides similar benefit. Effects are quite similar to warfarin, and Apixaban is associated with reduced risk of intracranial bleeding than warfarin. Warfarin, however, has an antidote available, while Apixaban does not; this can cause complications when emergency surgery is required.

To prevent stroke or embolism in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation:

  • Take 5 mg twice per day.
  • Patients who are over 80 years old or who weigh less than 132 pounds (60 kg) may be instructed to take 2.5 mg twice per day instead.
  • Treatment may continue indefinitely.

Following hip or knee replacement surgery:

  • Take 2.5 mg twice per day.
  • For knee surgery, treatment continues for 12 days.
  • For hip surgery, treatment continues for 35 days.

For treatment of existing deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism:

  • The first 7 days, take 10 mg twice per day.
  • After the first 7 days, take 5 mg twice per day.
  • Treatment may continue for 6 months or longer.

To prevent deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism from recurring:

  • Take 2.5 mg twice per day.
  • Treatment may continue for 6 months or longer.

Dosage and duration of treatment can vary from the above, depending on personal variables like age, weight, kidney or liver function, and so forth. Doctor instructions should be followed.

Potential Complications

Certain other medications, including other anticoagulants, antiplatelets, NSAIDs, SSRIs, and SNRIs can further complicate Apixaban's blood clotting effects. Whether or not these medications should be taken at the same time should be discussed with a doctor.

Patients who buy Apixaban should be aware that surgery is a risk. While taking the medication, if it is at all avoidable, surgery---including the dental variety---should be delayed until Apixaban has been discontinued for at least 48 hours.

For the duration of treatment patients should take care to avoid injury, including bruises; no contact sports, brush teeth gently to prevent bleeding, avoid or using great care when shaving, and so forth. Women should be alert for extra-heavy periods. Any alarming side effects should be brought to the attention of a doctor.
